For the first time on a tactile graphics device, digital tactile street maps are here!

Developed by accessibility innovator Dr. Josh Miele, TMAP makes it possible to generate tactile street maps from a ZIP code or postcode.

We recently joined Dr. Josh Miele for a special session demonstrating TMAP on Dot Pad.

Josh takes you through how to create a tactile map and explore a location, followed by a detailed Q&A about the technology and what could come next.

Explore a map yourself

With TMAP on Dot Pad, you can:

  • Enter a ZIP code or postcode to generate a map
  • Pan across streets and locations
  • Zoom in and out
  • Find intersections
  • Explore what’s around you

This creates new possibilities for independent orientation and mobility.

You could explore a neighborhood before traveling there, get familiar with the streets around a new school or workplace, or build an understanding of an unfamiliar area before you arrive.

Instead of relying on someone else to describe a map, you can explore it yourself.

A new kind of tactile mapping experience

Traditional tactile maps can provide valuable information about places and environments, but creating them can be time-consuming and access to specific locations can be limited.

TMAP changes what is possible by making it possible to generate tactile street maps from real-world locations.

Bringing TMAP to Dot Pad adds another dimension: the map is digital, refreshable and interactive.

You can move around the map, change the level of detail and explore different parts of a location. This has significant potential for independent exploration and orientation.
